It’s astonishing to see what happened in America through the powerful visual evidence presented to the world. We are witnessing right now, the ‘peoples sense of injustice’ which has been awakened and resonated by George Floyd’s cry “I can’t breathe”. We recognise that George Floyd’s tragic death is not an isolated incident, but the latest in a long line of tragedies experienced by the African American community through discriminatory state violence. And what is happening in America right now transcends borders. There will be many black members of our own communities who will particularly be feeling anger, fear and numbness as they watch these unfortunate events.
The Labour Party is built on an ethos of equality, tolerance and justice and it believes that everyone should speak up and take action whenever bigotry rears its ugly head. Let’s stand in solidarity with the friends, family and community of George Floyd, the African American community and those in our local communities for whom this will be a distressing time.
There will be much discussion around these issues, especially online and on social media. I strongly encourage everyone to watch, listen and educate themselves on these issues in America, the UK and around the world.
