Unemployment was twice as bad during the Tory recession Print E-mail

Issue date: January 28th 2010

The latest unemployment figures for St Albans underline the importance of the government’s continuing support for the economy, believes Labour Parliamentary candidate Roma Mills. Under a Conservative government, during the recession of the early 1990s more than twice as many people were out of work as they are today.

Roma Mills said: “The figures show that the support Labour has put in place is having a real impact in St Albans and right across the region. The Conservatives have said that we should already be cutting off government investment, which would simply repeat the mistakes that they made in the last recession. It would be a disaster for local people, whether they are in work or looking for a job.”
The figures show that in December 1992, under a Conservative government, over 4,300 people were out of work. In November 2009, fewer than 1,800 were unemployed.
