As St Albans shivers, residents are urged to take advantage of cut-price ‘green’ boiler scheme

With St Albans gripped by snow and freezing temperatures, Labour Parliamentary candidate Roma Mills is urging local residents to take advantage of a new initiative that could save them £400 on the cost of a new, high efficiency boiler. Under the boiler scrappage scheme announced by the Government on Tuesday, January 5th, householders with old ‘G-rated’ boilers can apply for a voucher that will entitle them to £400 off the price of an ‘A’ rated boiler or green heating system such as a biomass boiler or heat pump.

Roma Mills said: “The weather we have experienced in St Albans over the last few days really shows why a good boiler is important. Under this new scheme, residents have an opportunity to make a significant saving on the initial cost of a new heating system that will offer greater warmth and typically cut fuel bills by around £200 a year. Some energy companies are also offering further discounts on top of the Government’s £400 voucher.” Roma continued: “The scheme has the added benefits of cutting carbon emissions and securing jobs in the UK heating industry.”

The boiler scrappage scheme is open to 125,000 householders in an owned or privately rented property. Working G-rated boilers are eligible for the £400 voucher; typically these will feature a permanent pilot light. Gas fired boilers over fifteen years old and oil fired boilers over twenty years old are also likely to be eligible. Further details and a registration form can be found at www.est.org.uk or by calling 0800 512 012.
