Josh Molloy's inspiring article about Labour's achievements for young people Print E-mail

Josh Molloy meets with Roma Mills and Richard Howitt MEPJosh Molloy (pictured) is a 15 year old resident of Park Street who has been helping Roma Mills with her election campaign by canvassing and leafleting in St Albans.  He has been inspired by his experiences with Labour Party members to write the following article:

Without a doubt, the overwhelming priority for young people within St Albans is to have an elected representative who is true to their values and a real champion of the City in which they live. So in wake of the expenses scandal, at a time where young people are becoming ever disillusioned with the political process, what's needed is a real local advocate for St Albans. Someone who is prepared to deliver on behalf of there constituents under a government which can secure the economic recovery whilst continuing to invest in our public services. Without question, Roma Mills is that person. Serving the City for over 30 years, Roma has clear a record of success throughout local government, whether this be through delivering on local housing or fighting the rail freight terminal, it's evident to see that she is undoubtedly the right choice for St Albans.

On a national level, for young people in particular, the difference is equally clear, between a Labour government who will protect the frontline schools budget whilst continuing to invest in our education system, or a Conservative administration under which education would be forced down the agenda. Cuts in both the overall schools budget and the Building Schools for the Future programme would both follow, along with Michael Gove's plan to create an 'elitist' teaching system. Only Labour, can guarantee that everyone aged 18-24 will be promised either a job, training, or work experience placement if they are unemployed for more then six months, because we are the essentially the only party whose vision embraces young people at it's very centre.

But this all relates back to the very immediate issue of our economic recovery, which is undoubtedly the defining point of this general election. Led under Gordon Brown's leadership, we can build a fairer Britain, supporting new industries in the low-carbon sector whilst securing the recovery. Let's not allow the Tory message of 'change' to put our economy at risk, leaving families up and down the country isolated in the 'age of austerity' which they threaten. This is exactly why young people throughout the UK need to deliver an outright majority come May 6th; something which I thoroughly hope will be matched here in St Albans Labour.
