LIB DEMS HOSTEL DISGRACE

Roma Mills, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for St Albans, has slammed the Liberal Democrat Council’s decision to lease the old Ridgeview hostel for the homeless in London Colney to accommodate university students. The hostel has been cleaned and refurbished to house the undergraduates. However, the council originally closed the hostel claiming they needed to sell it in order to help pay for the re-development of Westminster Lodge leisure centre.

Free hospital parking plan is good news for Townsend Estate residents |

Roma Mills, district councillor for Batchwood, has welcomed the news that car parking charges for hospital in-patients and their visitors will be scrapped over the next three years. She is hoping that the recent announcement by health secretary Andy Burnham will benefit not just those visiting the City Hospital in her ward, but also residents who regularly suffer parking chaos on streets near to the site.

Fly-tipping on the rise in St Albans |

St Albans has suffered another big increase in fly-tipping, according to the latest government figures. According to a new report from Defra, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, there were a total of 863 local fly-tipping incidents in 2008-9, up from 729 the year before.

Roma Mills takes latest CO2 campaign to the heart of St Albans |

Campaigners led by Labour Parliamentary candidate Roma Mills met at The Peahen junction in St Albans on Sunday 22nd November to draw attention to the latest efforts to cut down on journeys by car. Reflecting recent concerns over the levels of air pollution in the city centre, Roma Mills encouraged residents to back the Government’s Act On CO2 campaign, which aims to get people to drive five miles less a week.

Fair deal on tips will help restaurant workers in St Albans |

Labour Parliamentary candidate Roma Mills has welcomed the news that local workers will now be guaranteed a fair deal on any tips that they earn. Rule changes that came into effect on October 1st mean that is now illegal for businesses to use tips to bring staff pay up to the minimum wage.
