It's time for action on housing

On Saturday 19th November at St Albans Market, the Labour Party will launch a campaign to return the target for building affordable homes in the District to at least 200 per year. This was the target to which we, as a community, aspired as far back as 1994. But more recently that aspiration to help local people has been diluted.

In 2010, when the local housing waiting list grew by 300 to a record 1,800 households, the Council decided to halve the target for new affordable homes to just 100 per annum. And that's where it will stay for many years to come as part of the new Local Plan to be announced next year. Unless we, as a community, force Councillors to think again.

If you agree with us that your Council, of whichever political persuasion, should make the provision of decent housing for local people a top priority, please visit us at our stall in St Peter's Street this Saturday and sign our petition. If you can't make it, you can still help put a roof over a family's head by visiting our petition online at: (web address). Alternatively - or additionally - please contact your local Councillors (each ward has at least two and their contact details are on the Council website), and ask them to support a return to the policy of building at least 200 affordable homes each year.

Sign the pettition and help build a better young people and families in St Albans. Just follow the link below.
