Batchwood By-election; the 90 second breifing

When’s the election;
Thursday 19th January 2012, polls open at 7am and close at 10pm.
Why?
The Liberal Democrat district councillor resigned from her position in December triggering a by election.
What am I voting for?
Voters are being asked to select a district councillor for Batchwood ward, you can find boundaries of the ward here. The district council has responsibility for local planning policy, housing and parking.
Does it really matter?
When times are tough and it’s a fight for resources, residents need a strong voice on the district council. Roma Mills has twenty years experience of fighting for local residents and is a well known and respected figure for her work.
Politically this is the most important by-election of the last few years. The Conservatives came second behind Labour in 2011, if they win this time they will take majority control of the district council.
Anything else I should know
You can read a biography of Roma Mills, the Labour candidate here, read Roma’s letter to voters here and our election address here.
How will I know who won?
For the first time in St Albans, we’ll be breaking the news of what happens on election day first, follow @Stalbanslabour on Twitter as we blog through polling day and the count. We’ll also be posting video interviews with candidates, councillors and the campaign team on election night.
